Hockey: UniKL can top standings if they beat MBPJ by seven goals
By S. RAMAGURU
KUALA LUMPUR: Last year’s runners-up Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) have the chance to top the standings in the MHC-MILO-NSC Junior Hockey League (MJHL) if they can beat Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) by seven goals today.
UniKL won their opening two matches 6-2 and 6-1 against SSTMI Juniors and BJSS respectively. They have six points while Thunderbolt, who have played three matches, lead with nine.
But it will not be easy for UniKL to chalk up a big win over MBPJ, who also have six points from two matches.
UniKL coach K. Embaraj is not concerned about the score line but only the three points.
“First we need to collect the three points. Only then can we think of anything else. For me, the important thing is for the team to improve and get their structure right. We want to expose the players and give them a run in the league.
“MBPJ are tough to play against so it will not be an easy match,” said Embaraj. MBPJ have also played two games – beating SSTMI-Juniors 3-2 and BJSS 1-0.
The PJ side know that beating UniKL will speed up their chase for the title. But a defeat will result in a two-horse race between Thunderbolt and UniKL.
“I hope it is as easy as it sounds. There is still a lot of work to be done before we clash with Thunderbolt on Feb 7. Collecting full points is our objective for now. We will take it one game at a time as we had planned and as long as the players continue to learn and improve, we are moving in the right direction,” Embaraj added.
In the other Division One match today, BJSS will get a chance to chalk up their first win when they play newly promoted Malacca High School.
