Lee Chong Wei defeated Indonesian Sony Dwi Kuncoro 21-7, 21-8 to win his record ninth Malaysian Open title. KUALA LUMPUR: World No.1 Lee Chong Wei slayed his old Indonesian rival Sony Dwi Kuncoro 21-7, 21-8 to win his record ninth Maybank Malaysian Open title at the Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil on Sunday.
The 30-year-old who had already equalled the late Wong Peng Soon's record of eight titles last year, set out for the kill and did not allow Sony any foothold in the match.
He established huge leads with excellent smashes and cross court shots and the match was over in just 32 minutes, sending the full-house crowd into a frenzy.
'I'm really happy that there was a full turnout in the crowd and that really inspired to go on to win the match. I'm also happy that I managed to set a new record of nine titles," said Chong Wei.
There was, however, disappointment for mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying who were beaten in straight sets by Denmark's Joachim Fischer Nielsen-Chrstinna Pedersen 13-21, 18-21.
In men's doubles, newly form Indonesian pair Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan upset the formbooks with a stunning display to beat South Koreans Ko Sung-hyun-Lee Yong-dae 21-15, 21-13.
The women's singles title went to Taiwanese youngster Tai Tzu Ying who showed maturity beyond her age in dispatching China's Yao Xue.
China did win one title as women's pair Bao Yixin-Tian Qing proved too powerful for Japan's Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi.
