Our juniors bag three golds in Sydney

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia picked up 17 medals – three golds, five silvers and nine bronzes – at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF), which ended in Sydney yesterday.
It was shooting team who provided the biggest haul for the 76-member Malaysian contingent, winning two golds, two silvers and three bronzes.
Choo Wen Yan was victorious in the boys’ 10m air pistol, accumulating 664.7 points to beat his personal best of 568 on his way to the top of the podium. Joseph Lee Joon Kit contributed the second gold by winning the boys’ skeet event.
Malaysia’s third gold came in badminton, courtesy of the girls’ doubles pair of Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean who beat China’s Huang Yaqiang and Yu Xiaohan 24-22, 21-15 to win their first-ever international title.
Malaysia also had representatives in three other finals – Soong Joo Ven (boys’ singles), Lim Yin Fun (girls’ singles) and the boys’ doubles pair of Tai An Khang-Tan Wee Gieen. Sadly, all of them lost to shuttlers from China.
In rhythmic gymnastics, Malaysia won two bronzes in the team event (Shak Yuki, Shasangari Sivaneswary Nagarajan, Chong Lok Yi and Iman Iskandar Chan) and individual all-around event (Iman).
Cycling provided three bronzes while diving could only manage one bronze.
In the previous festival in 2009, Malaysia came home with a haul of four golds, three silvers and three bronzes.

Bronze: Muhammad Firdaus Mohd Zonis (cycling – boys’ keirin), Nurul Alissa Mohamad Azman (cycling – girls’ keirin), Noraidillina Adilla J Sam, Nurjeha Iwani Roslan, Noor Azian Maslin Sazali, Nurul Alissa Mohamad Azman (cycling – girls’ team pursuit), Chew Yiwei (diving – boys’ 3m springboard), Shak Yuki, Shasangari Sivaneswary Nagarajan, Chong Lok Yi and Iman Iskandar Chan (rhythmic gymnastics – team all-around), Iman Iskandar Chan (rhythmic gymnastics – individual all-around), Abdul Hadi Abd Malek (shooting – boys’ 10m air pistol), Mohd Nurrahimin Abdul Halim (shooting – boys’ 50m rifle three-position), Nurul Fatihah Mohamad (shooting – girls’ 25m pistol).
