Sobhy shows Delia the exit in New York
Stunning win: Joshna Chinappa scored the upset of the day, beating second seed Dipika Pallikal to reach the quarter-finals. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s challenge in the Tournament of Champions squash championships in New York ended after national No. 3 Delia Arnold was shown the exit in the women’s competition on Monday.
Sixth seed Amanda Sobhy of the United States proved too good for Delia, needing only 28 minutes to win 11-8, 11-1, 11-7 to set up a date with third seed Kasey Brown of Australia in the quarter-finals.
Brown came back from the brink of defeat to beat qualifier Heba El Torky of Egypt 9-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-9.
Qualifier Joshna Chinappa of India created the biggest upset of the day. She stunned compatriot and second seed Dipika Pallikal 11-7, 11-7, 3-11, 11-8. Joshna, ranked 30th in the world, will take on fifth seed Rachael Grinham of Australia for a place in the semi-finals.
Grinham, who turned 36 yesterday, eliminated Amanda Landers-Murphy of New Zealand 13-11, 11-4, 11-5 in 26 minutes.
Top seed Madeline Perry of Ireland had no problems beating American Latasha Khan 11-9, 11-8, 11-2 in 27 minutes. Perry’s quarter-final opponent is seventh seed Joey Chan of Hong Kong.
In the men’s competition, top seed James Willstrop of England defeated Steve Coppinger of South Africa 12-10, 11-2, 11-4 to qualify for the semi-finals. Willstrop will face fourth seed Ramy Ashour of Egypt for a place in the final.
