Ashour beats Gaultier in New York
KUALA LUMPUR: Fourth seed Ramy Ashour of Egypt won his third Tourna-ment of Champions title with a dramatic comeback from two sets down to beat third seed Gregory Gaultier of France in the final in New York on Thursday.
Ashour, who won the world title in Doha last month, lost the first two sets 7-11, 6-11 before he showed nerves of steel to win the remaining three sets 12-10, 11-3, 11-1 in 72 minutes.
It was the 25-year-old Ashour’s third title in the tournament after victories in 2008 and 2011. Ashour, who is ranked number one in the world, said that with Gregory playing so well in the beginning, he just had to keep digging.
“Gregory is amazing when he is playing well. I am proud of myself for my hard fought win over the Frenchman. I am really happy to win my third title. It is also nice to win the world title and be ranked number one in the world,” said Ashour.
Fourth seed Natalie Grinham of Holland retained her title by upsetting third seed Kasey Brown of Australia 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 in the women’s final.
The 34-year-old Natalie, the mother of a two-year-old son, was happy to retain her title in straight sets.
It was her 17th professional circuit title since turning pro in 1995.
