PETALING JAYA: Singapore’s Austin Karosi won the men’s singles title in the BMW Malaysia National Circuit Leg One after defeating Si Yew Ming in the final at the Tun Razak Tennis Complex in Jalan Duta yesterday.
The 23-year-old Karosi was stretched to the limit by Yew Ming before winning 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.
“It feels really good. When you are not at your best and you still fight through something, it almost feels better sometimes. This week it wasn’t my best but I have to say I served really great and my serves carried me through the tournament. I’ll have to go back and work on my groundstrokes and baseline game,” said Karosi who took home RM4,000.
“But I won, so can’t complain. I wish I could have played a little better,” he added.
In the women’s singles final, S. Theviya held off giant-killer Yussyazlin Nabila Yusri to emerge champion.
Yussyazlin, who upset former national champion Alyssa Boey 6-1, 6-4 en route to the final, put up a brave fight before losing 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
“It was a pretty tough match. I wanted to perform well but I got nervous. But it started to ease up as I got through the game. I’m very happy to win,” said Theviya, who also clinched the women’s doubles title with Aslina Chua.
