Danny shoots sizzling 66 to win Kinrara Classic again
PETALING JAYA: Danny Chia consolidated his position as Malaysia’s top golfer when he overcame a four-shot deficit to win the RM150,000 PGM I&P Kinrara Classic by two strokes at the Kinrara Golf Club yesterday.
It was a repeat performance by Danny as he was also the winner of the season-opening tournament last year. But this time, Danny had to work a lot harder to make up the deficit. He did just that with a sizzling five-under 66 for a 273 total.
S. Sivachandhran, the overnight leader, fumbled with a 72 for a 275 aggregate to finish second while Airil Rizman capped a good weekend with a 69 for a third-place finish on 278.
Sivachandhran’s downfall came at the par-five 10th hole. He was then leading by two strokes but saw his advantage evaporate with a double-bogey while Danny had a birdie.
Sivachandhran said he was rather unlucky as he lost his ball on his second shot.
“It is one of those things in golf, but it came at the wrong time,” said Sivachandhran, adding that his putting also let him down in the final round.
Danny was understandably delighted with the triumph.
“Yes, I’m pleased with the win. I won last season’s opening event and have managed to do it again. Hopefully this time it will be the start of a string of victories,” said Danny.
The PGM Tour’s next event is the CCM Rahman Putra Masters at Kelab Rahman Putra from Jan 30-Feb 2.
