Syafiq targets two more golds

PETALING JAYA: National bowler Syafiq Ridhwan Abdul Malek is on a mission to complete his collection of honours.
Last November, he became the first Malaysian to win the World Cup when he defeated Marshall Kent of the United States in Wroclaw, Poland.
With gold medals from the SEA Games and the World Cup safely tucked away in his trophy cabinet, Syafiq is eyeing the World Championships and the Asian Games gold medals next.
Syafiq’s consistent performance thus far – winning three back-to-back tournaments since November (Taiwan Open, World Cup and Penang Pesta) – has put him on the fast lane to Las Vegas for the world meet from Aug 18-31. The Asian Games will be held in Incheon, South Korea, next year.
“If I have gold medals from these two events, I will feel complete,” said the 27-year-old.
Syafiq, who is hoping for better consistency in tournaments leading up to the world meet, will vie for a spot in the squad for the Brunswick Euro Challenge in Munich, Germany, from March 19-24.
The organisers have moved the tournament away from the quaint St Maximin town in France to Munich this year.
“In Munich, the bowling centre is within walking distance from the hotel ... it’s also a much busier city,” said Syafiq.
“It’s just the opposite of St Maximin,” said Syafiq.
The national trainees will face a roll-off to be selected for the tournament after the Chinese New Year celebration on Feb 10-11 and Syafiq knows he has to get cracking in training if he wants to earn a spot in the team for Munich.
“It’s never easy with roll-offs. There are seven of us in the team and only six will be selected. But I’m sure I can get a spot,” he said.
The others in the men’s squad are Zulmazran Zulkifli, Alex Liew, Muhd Nur Aiman Khairuddin, Isaac Russell Paul and Aris Ardila Santosoh.
Adrian Ang, who recently returned to training after a prolonged finger injury, is also in contention.
