Japan takes 2-0 lead over Indonesia in Davis Cup
TOKYO: Japan's Go Soeda played an almost perfect game against Indonesia's Wisnu Adi Nugroho on Friday, giving Japan a 2-0 lead over Indonesia in the Davis Cup tennis Asia-Oceania Zone Group I first-round tie.
The 67th-ranked Soeda, fresh from winning the Maui Challenger in Hawaii earlier this month, coasted through an easy 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 victory over the lowly-ranked Nugroho.
The winner of the best-of-five contest will play either South Korea or India in the second round in April.
Earlier in the day on the hard court at the Ariake Coliseum, Japan's number three Tatsuma Ito overran Indonesia's number one Christopher Rungkat to win 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 in the opener.
"If I was two or three years younger, it would have been a closer match," said Ito, ranked 84th in the world against Rungkat's 252nd.
"I've learnt from my experience playing in Grand Slams and on the national team, which enabled me to play my usual game in a situation like this. I was able to control the match as I wanted," added Ito, 24.
Ito will partner national team debutant Yasutaka Uchiyama in the doubles against Elbert Sie and Ketut-Nesa Arta on Saturday before the two reverse singles matches on Sunday.-AFP
