Amy cherishes family-bonding time in Johor

PETALING JAYA: Chinese New Year is all about family reunion. And Amy Kwan Dict Weng is all excited about ushering in the Year of the Snake with the rest of the Kwan clan.
It’s a Kwan family tradition to take turns hosting the rest of the family during the celebration. This time, the rhythmic gymnast, her parents – Kwan Ah Guan and Chen Yoke Chang – and older sisters Peggy, 22, and Eva, 20, are at her aunt’s place in Air Tawar, Johor.
The trip down south will be a brief respite for Amy, who will return to training at Bukit Jalil on Tuesday.
She counts the celebration as a great excuse to take her mind off gymnastics and spend some quality time with her family. Not to mention enjoying the festivities with her 10 cousins and sampling her aunt’s cooking.
“It’s the one chance that I can get together with my parents, sisters and all my relatives – especially my aunt – all under one roof. So, it’s about spending time with them as I hardly get to see them,” said Amy.
Born in the Year of the Boar, Amy hopes that 2013 will be a good year for her career-wise.
She’s had a rough past year, having fractured the metatarsal in her left leg for a second time en route to winning the gold medal in the ball, hoop, ribbon and team events at the fourth Asean Schools Games in Indonesia in July. The injury sidelined her for four months.
While Amy’s disappointed not to be able to compete at the SEA Games, her main goal is to stay injury-free.
“My new year wish is for my family, friends and myself to have the best of luck and good health,” said the 18-year-old, whose first competition will be the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup (Category B) in Lisbon, Portugal, in April.
