Adiq gears up for LTdL with perfect tune-up in Qatar
By SHAMSUL FITRI
PETALING JAYA: Mohd Adiq Husanie Othman’s (pic) preparations for this year’s Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) is coming along just fine.
Lining up for pro continental outfit Champion System for the second year, he enjoyed a quality workout at the Tour of Qatar last week (Feb 3-8), riding alongside big names like overall winner Mark Cavendish of Britain and Swiss star Fabian Cancellara.
It was just the right tune-up for Adiq as the race in Qatar was all about dealing with the incredibly fast pace of the race and the strong desert winds.
“I’m lucky the team named me for the Qatar race this year ... getting a little bit of racing before the LTdL is important after building up on my endurance in the pre-season,” said the 21-year-old London Olympian who returned home from Qatar on Sunday.
“The race in Qatar was fast because all the stages were flat. It was a good workout for me ahead of the LTdL.”
Adiq will be looking to grab some podium finishes in this year’s LTdL, which will be held from Feb 21-March 2, in the more undulating stages.
Last year, Adiq almost landed himself on the podium in Stage Five – from Ayer Keroh to Ampang – but ended up fourth.
This time, he will have a chance to put himself in a good position in Stage Two (Serdang Kuala Kangsar) and Stage Four (Tapah-Kapar) as the riders take on the undulating terrains in Kedah and Perak.
“I’m not going to put myself in contention for the overall position because climbing the steep gradients, like in Genting Highlands, is not really my strength.
“But I will try my luck on the rolling terrain,” said Adiq, who was the best Malaysian finisher in LTdL last year when he finished 19th overall.
