KUALA LUMPUR: AMF World Cup champion Syafiq Ridhwan Abdul Malik is among four local undergraduates to receive the National Higher Education awards and incentives for their excellent achievement in sports last year.
The awards will be given away by Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin at the Berjaya Times Square here today.
The other recipients are woman national bowler Sin Li Jane, diver Bryan Nickson Lomas and petanque athlete Mohd Nuzul Azwan Ahmad Termizi
The 26-year-old Syafiq, of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), became the first Malaysian to win the prestigious AMF World Cup in Wroclaw, Poland, last December. Syafiq, who is married to Noor Syafira Noor Rashid, defeated top seed Marshall Kent of the United States 236-225, 237-221 in the final to clinch the title.
Li Jane, of Sunway College University, finished fifth in the AMF World Cup.
The Sarawak-born Bryan, of Universiti Malaya, won the bronze medal in 3-metre springboard event in the FINA World Cup in London last February. Nuzul, of Universiti Islam Antarabangsa, bagged the bronze in the triples event of the petanque World Cup in Marseille, last October.
The 22-year-old Bryan, who featured in three Olympics – Athens (2004), Beijing (2008) and London (2012) – said that he was honoured to receive the award and incentive.
“The award and incentive will inspire me to do well in the World University Games (in Kazan, Russia, from July 6-17),” said Bryan.
