Dragons staring at fifth straight loss against Beermen
KUALA LUMPUR: Westports Malaysia Dragons can expect to hit a low five when they take on San Miguel Beermen in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) at the Maba Stadium today.
The Dragons, who have lost four straight matches, will not have the services of top scorer Cedric Bozemen for today’s game. He will be sidelined for four to six weeks after injuring his knee in the fourth quarter of the match against the Singapore Slingers on Feb 5.
Dragons team manager Yakub Hussaini said that Cedric’s injury was a big blow to the team.
“Having to find a temporary replacement is not an easy task as many of the players out there are either taken or not match fit,” said Yakub, who revealed that they managed to rope in Sammy Monroe to replace fellow-American Bozemen.
“When we contacted Sammy and his agent, we were told that he was working out in Las Vegas with a renowned skills coach. So, we believe he is ready for the ABL,” said Yakub.
The Dragons will also be without skipper Guga Batumalai, who is still recovering from a groin strain sustained in the match against Slingers.
The Dragons have played six matches so far and only won twice – against Saigon Heat (80-70) and Thailand Slammers (91-83) – and are in fifth spot in the six-team competition.
Today’s match will also be a rematch last season’s semi-final, where the Beermen defeated the Dragons in three games before going on to lose the final to the Indonesia Warriors.
The game will also see the return of former Dragon Brian Williams for the first time since joining the Beermen. Williams was the leading rebounder for the Dragons last season.
