Amelia-Fie Cho bag first career title, Mei Kuan-Meng Yean eye success too
KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttlers Amelia Alicia Ancelly-Soong Fie Cho won their first career title at the International Iran Challenge yesterday. And Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean are looking forward to emulate their feat at this week’s Austrian International Challenge in Vienna.
Yesterday, Sabahans Amelia-Fie Cho, who joined the national team last September, defeated top seeds Nicole Grether-Charmaine Reid of Canada 21-19, 21-15 in the women’s doubles final of the Satellite tournament.
“It is a good start for the women’s doubles department. This is the first women’s doubles title for the year albeit a minor one but we hope to slowly gain momentum from here,” said women’s doubles coach Rosman Razak.
There has been a void in the women’s doubles department following the retirements of Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty last year. Both are now coaches.
With one title in the bag, Rosman will be banking on Mei Kuan-Meng Yean, who left for Vienna yesterday, to reap success as well. The duo have been given the top billing in the Satellite tournament.
“Technically, this will be Mei Kuan-Meng Yean’s first senior tournament. They have been training with me since last year but they have been also busy competing in junior tournaments. From now onwards, they will only concentrate on senior meets,” said Rosman.
Last month, the duo did well to nail the girls’ doubles gold medal in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival by beating Chinese pair Huang Yaqiang-Yu Xiaohan in the final.
Rosman said that Meng Yean had also been hitting the gymnasium to shed off extra kilos.
“She had been struggling with a slight weight issue but she is fitter and faster on the court now. Naturally, I am looking forward to a good result from them in the Austrian Open. They are our future star players,” he added.
Besides Amelia-Fie Choo and Mei Kuan-Meng Yean, the other pairs under Rosman’s care are Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei, Lim Yin Loo-Goh Liu Ying and Marylen Ng Paou Leng-Shevon Lai Jemie.
