Singapore to spice up Koko Krunch taekwondo tournament

KUALA LUMPUR: The Nestle Koko Krunch Junior Taekwondo Cham-pionships 2013 has gone international with Singapore set to host one leg for the first time.
The championships, currently in the eighth year, will now feature five legs (an increase from four last year) which will be held over three months culminating in the Grand Finals for the Nestle Koko Krunch Junior Taekwondo Tunku Imran Challenge Trophy which will be held in Kuala Lumpur on June 23.
Opened to both boys and girls aged between 7-12 years old, this year’s edition will feature approximately 2,200 exponents from both countries.
At the launch in Bukit Jalil yesterday, Olympic Council of Malaysia and Taekwondo Malaysia (TM) president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja’afar lauded the efforts of TM and Nestle Breakfast Cereals for continuously working towards promoting and sustaining the competitions at grassroots level.
“This is an exciting development and one that augurs well for taekwondo at grassroots level. Having Singapore joining in will allow exponents from both sides of the causeway to gauge their skills against international opponents which can only help them develop into better athletes,” said Tunku Imran.
Young exponent Esha Rai is excited at the prospect of competing at the championships again after winning a silver in the girls’ 27-30kg category last year.
The 11-year-old Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Bandaraya student is now relishing the prospect of competing against her Singapore counterparts.
“I’m very excited. I won the silver last year. So this year I want to win the gold,” said Esha, who will be competing in the same category this time around.
The first leg will kick off in Kepala Batas, Penang (March 2-3) followed by Batu Pahat, Johor (April 6-7), Toa Payoh, Singapore (April 27-28), Kota Baru, Kelantan (May 3-4) and culminates with the Grand Finals in Kuala Lumpur (June 9, 22 and 23).
