India drop Bhupathi, Bopanna for Davis Cup tie

NEW DELHI: India's tennis selectors on Saturday ignored rebels Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna for the Asia-Oceania group one Davis Cup tie against Indonesia.

The doubles specialists were among 11 players who declined to play against South Korea earlier this month, but made themselves available only for the Indonesia tie following a conditional truce with the tennis federation.

India, forced to name three debutants against South Korea, were thrashed 4-1 and must now defeat Indonesia in Bangalore from April 5 to 7 to avoid being relegated to group two.

Singles players Somdev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri, who also refused to play against South Korea, returned to the squad, according to an All India Tennis Association (AITA) statement.

Veteran Leander Paes will partner Sanam Singh in the doubles. An agreement worked out after the South Korea tie saw the rebels announce they will be available against Indonesia.

This followed an AITA letter to the players accepting some demands like a higher share of the prize money from Cup matches, business-class air travel for ties and the players' involvement in the choice of venues.

The AITA retained non-playing captain Shiv Misra and coach Zeeshan Ali. - AFP
