BRC International 10s attracts more than 2,000 budding players
PETALING JAYA: More than 2,000 budding players from 140 teams will compete in the Bintang Rugby Club (BRC) International 10s at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian Club from March 2-3.
The players, hailing from several Malaysian schools and clubs as well as clubs from Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Dubai, will compete in 10 age groups – from the Under-7 to the Under-18.
The huge turnout for this year’s tournament, compared to just 40 teams in its first year in 2008, certainly augurs well for the sport.
“BRC strive to make rugby accessible to all and, as such, this tournament certainly opens the gate for students who are not from boarding schools,” said BRC vice-president and coach Dave Goulding.
“Traditionally in Malaysia, boarding schools are the ones who have a rugby system while ‘normal’ schools are not very inclined towards rugby and this results in the kids getting less exposure to the sport.
“Thus, it really is great that we have so many local boys joining BRC. We have about 400 Malaysian kids in our club and it’s great for the sport.”
