BMW Malaysian Open: Defending champ Su-Wei advances to quarters

KUALA LUMPUR: Defending champion Hsieh Su-Wei advanced into the quarterfinals of the BMW Malaysian Open after beating China's Zhang Shuai in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 at the Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) here Thursday.
Leading 4-1 and then 5-2 in the second set, second seed Su-Wei struggled to close the game as Zhang was not willing to give up the match without a fight.
The world No. 23 will next face American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who beat China's Duan Ying Ying 6-1, 6-4.
Russia's third seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova also advanced to the quarterfinals after beating Uzbek qualifier Akgul Amanmuradova in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
Giant killer Wang Qiang's run at the championships ended prematurely as she fell to 3-6, 2-6 to unseeded Particia Mayr-Achleitner.
In the doubles competition, the wildcard pairing of Malaysia's Aslina Chua and China's Yang Zi fought valiantly before bowing out of the first round after losing to fourth seeds Rika Fujiwara of Japan and Zhang Saisai of China 5-7, 6-3, 4-10.
