Age not a problem for marathon champion Shaharudin
KUALA LUMPUR: Nothing, it seems, can stop Shaharudin Hashim from doing what he loves best – running in marathons.
The Parit Buntar-born national marathon champion will turn 38 on June 25 and that’s a real concern. And what’s more, he doesn’t have a coach either!.
Shahrudin, who has been the national champion since 2004 and who now lives in Kuala Lumpur, has been training with French marathon runner and good friend Jean Pierre Lautredoux.
“I love to run and will continue to do so for as long as I can. I’m physically in good shape, despite my age,” said Shaharudin, who only started running in marathons 11 years ago.
And he has no qualm about training with Lautredoux, who has competed in marathons all over the world.
“I’ve been training with him for a couple of years. Jean is 46 and still runs in marathons. He has been a source of inspiration for me to continue running in marathons,” said Shaharudin, who won the Penang Bridge marathon last November and will be featuring in the 14th Asian Championships marathon in Hong Kong on Feb 24.
“I’ve been training hard and hope to clock a personal best in Hong Kong. I’ll be up against the best Asian runners from Japan, South Korea and China and I hope to finish in a good position.”
Shaharudin has a personal best of 2’33:21, which he did in the South Korea Marathon in 2007.
“My mission is to qualify for the Myanmar SEA Games in December and to do that I’ll need to clock below 2’30:00,” said Shaharudin, who featured in the 2007 Korat SEA Games..
