Yusof and Shaiful defy the odds to come out tops
PETALING JAYA: Former KBS Speedway rider Muhammad Yusof Omar and his AHM LMC Repsol Racing Team took top honours in Round 8 of the KBS-MAM Kapcai Endurance National Championship in Kuala Terengganu.
The series will now culminate with the Grand Finals at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) in three weeks’ time.
Partnering Shaiful Nizam Azal on a Yamaha LC machine, the 24-year-old bicycle mechanic from Kajang completed 131 laps around the 700m PSM Go-Kart Track in a race that was cut short to 1 hour 38 minutes after one of the competitors crashed into the gantry and cut the timing cords.
Competing in Class 3 for bikes under 150cc in a combined race scheduled for two hours, the two-man team even upstaged riders competing in the the Open class which was won by Wa Motor Racing. Their professional riders only managed 130 laps.
“I’m so happy ... this is so far my biggest achievement in motor racing; having competed in the National Speedway National Championship in 2009 and in the cub prix championship in the privateer category.
“We’re really looking forward to the Grand Finals in Sepang next (Feb 24), it’s going to be very challenging; but we aim to surprise our rivals – just like we did today,” said Yusof, whose priority will be to build up his fitness level.
“We race for two hours and it’s already very, very hard. Imagine doing it for four hours around the Sepang Circuit. It’s going to be very challenging.”
The top winners at the Grand Finals will earn automatic slots to compete in the prestigious SIC Ninja 250 Cup, which opens the door for selection to ride at the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix on a wild card ticket.
