Nicol downs Wee Wern to reach semi-finals
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian squash queen and world No. 1 Nicol David (pic) advanced to the semi-finals of the Cleveland Classic Squash Championships after beating compatriot Low Wee Wern on Sunday.
Nicol proved too strong for Wee Wern, winning 12-10, 11-6, 11-9 at the Cleveland Racquet Club in Ohio, the United States.
The 29-year-old Nicol will play Ireland’s Madeline Perry for a place in the final. Perry, seeded eighth, was involved in a titanic tussle with fourth seed Joelle King of New Zealand before winning 3-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-3, 11-5.
The other semi-final is between Alison Waters of England and Raneem El Weleily of Egypt.
Waters, the third seed, outplayed Egyptian Nour El Sherbini 11-9, 11-2, 11-7 while world No. 2 Raneem eliminated Hong Kong’s Annie Au 11-3, 11-6, 12-10. — Bernama
