Serious injury shatters Amirul’s hopes of Le Tour de Langkawi debut

Saufi Mat Senan: A competent climber who’s a good example to Nur Amirul Fakhruddin Marzuki. PETALING JAYA: Terengganu Cycling’s Nur Amirul Fakhruddin Marzuki waited three years to make his debut in the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) from Feb 21–March 2.
But now that his time has come, Amirul’s hopes of a dream debut have been shattered by a serious injury suffered during training at Cameron Highlands last month.
The injury was to his left arm was so bad that, according to Amirul, “you could see the bone right through”.
“I think it’s over for me. Every time the road gets bumpy, I can feel a buzz emanating from the handlebars to the cut ... it’s just painful,” he said.
“Even the stitches are not totally healed yet ... and I can’t even ride more than two hours during training.”
That’s just plain bad luck as the 21-year-old is seen as a talented mountain rider.
His recent third-placing in the mountain stage of the Tour of Ijen in Indonesia clearly showed his potential to be groomed into a competent climber alongside team-mate Saufi Mat Senan. Amirul finished the three-day race in fourth overall.
Amirul’s latest injury situation has left the team in a precarious position as they are only left with six riders for the LTdL.
The six are Saufi, Mohd Harrif Salleh, Mohd Zamri Salleh, Nur Umardi Rosdi, Shahrul Mat Amin and Saiful Anuar Abdul Aziz.
Should any one of them get injured, the team will lack the manpower to help bring sprinter Harrif to the front for the sprint finishes – the team’s main objective in LTdL.
“I wish them the best ... I’m sure they can manage it,” said Amirul.
