Bulls-eye!: Hafiz Adzha made a significant mark on the local scene when he beat the national record held by seasoned campaigner Hasli Izwan at the 2010 National Championships, shooting a personal best of 585 to erase the old mark of 584.

KUALA LUMPUR: National shooter Hafiz Adzha is still full of fire despite a dose of double disappointment in the last week.

First, his pet event – the 25m rapid fire pistol – was dropped from the Myanmar SEA Games programme. Then a few days ago, the national record holder failed to gun down any medals in the Selangor Championships at the Subang Shooting Range.

“Things are not looking rosy at all. I didn’t start the year well. Then, I found out that I have nothing to look forward to at the end of the year either now that the 25m rapid fire, an Olympic event, has been scrapped,” lamented Hafiz.

The SEA Games hosts are only offering medals for three shooting events for men – the individual and team events for 10m air pistol, 50m free pistol and 50m rifle prone.

They are also hosting three events in the women’s competition – the individual and team events for 10m air pistol, 25m sports pistol and 50m rifle prone.

The 27-year-old Hafiz made a significant mark on the local scene when he beat the national record held by seasoned campaigner Hasli Izwan at the 2010 National Championships, shooting a personal best of 585 to erase the old mark of 584.

He continued to sizzle last year, defeating reigning SEA Games champion Ha Minh Thanh of Vietnam for the individual gold medal at the Southeast Asian (Seasa) Championships in Subang.

“I was really looking forward to the SEA Games ... now I won’t even be going. They’ve dropped almost half the events. I don’t plan to switch to another event ... it’s pointless.”

Hafiz, however, plans to use the next few months to regain his form.

“The first leg of the World Cup will be held in Kuwait in March. There’s also the University Games. I’d rather focus on getting my touch again. I shot below par at the Selangor Championships and I must work harder,” said the elite shooter.
