Professional cricketer Arul does his bit for the needy
Doing something noble: Malaysian cricketer Arul Suppiah has chosen to channel the donations to the Children’s Hospice South West and support the PCA Benevolent Fund KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Arul Suppiah will have his hands full this year. Not only will he be playing professional cricket with his club Somerset in England, he’s also involved in organising charity events.
The 29-year-old Arul has been granted a “benefit year” by Somerset County Cricket Club for his loyalty. Under the “benefit year”, Arul gets to host a variety of events to raise funds for charitable organisations and himself.
He has chosen to channel the donations to the Children’s Hospice South West and support the PCA Benevolent Fund. His commitment to the PCA is to help the current and former players and their dependants in times of hardship.
“Every year a player is chosen by the club. I’m honoured to benefit from it this year. It’s a great way to make some pocket money and help others in need. The best part of this is that I’ll have to run the events and my benefit committee will have to come up with our own ideas,” he said.
“We have listed all our events on our website (www.arulsuppiahbenefit2013.com). It’s going to be a busy year indeed.
“All these are meant to teach me to be independent and confident. It’s also a great way to get the support of the people. I’ll meet many people along the way and it feels good to be able to do something noble besides playing cricket.”
Arul, who left Malaysia as a 12-year-old to pursue his cricket career and was educated at the Millfield School and Exeter University, has been playing for the club since 2002.
Two years ago, he stole the limelight when he set a world record for the best bowling figures in T20 cricket, taking six wickets for five runs in 3.2 overs against Middlesex.
The Kepong-born Arul is proof that one can succeed overseas if one is single-minded in his pursuit of excellence.
