Nachimuthu grabs slim one-shot lead after the first round of PGM Clearwater Classic
PETALING JAYA: Seasoned golfer R. Nachi-muthu shot a five-under 67 to take the first round lead in the RM150,000 PGM Clearwater Classic in Batu Gajah, Perak yesterday.
Nachimuthu carded a bogey-free round at the Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort yesterday to lead S. Sivachandran and Anis Helmi by a stroke.
“My putting was quite good today, better than it has been for a while now ... so that is a good sign,” said Nachimuthu.
Meanwhile, Sivachandran described his round as “steady” and added that he holed some good putts which gave him confidence.
“I had two birdies on each nine and made some good putts and par-saves,” he said.
“It was not really a solid round as I wasn’t striking the ball as cleanly as I would like, but I am happy with it. My driving was good, so I am pleased with that too.”
Two strokes off the lead were Azman Basharuddin and Rizal Amin while Hans Jamil and Chan Soo Keong shot two-under 70s for a tie at sixth place while reigning PGM Tour Order of Merit champion Nicholas Fung and Shaifubari Muda tied for eighth on 71.
Newly turned pro Zen Dharmaratne, S. Murthy, Sukree Othman, Iylia Jamil, amateur player Abel Tam and Alwarith Damian were joint 10th on 72.
Leading first round scores: 67: R. Nachimuthu, 68: S. Sivachandhran, Anis Helmi, 69: Azman Basharuddin, Rizal Amin, 70: Hans Jamil, Chan Soo Keong, 71: Nicholas Fung, Shaifubari Muda, 72: Zen Dharmaratne, S. Murthy, Sukree Othman, Iylia Jamil, Abel Tam (a), Alwarith Damian.
