Armed Forces’ Joseline narrowly clinches shooting gold
By ASHREENA PILLAI
SUBANG: Joseline Cheah of Armed Forces clinched the women’s 10m air pistol individual gold at the National Shooting Association of Malaysia’s Ally T.H. Ong Trophy by the skin of her teeth yesterday.
The 30-year-old shot a 196 total to beat the 195.70 score of Kedah’s Wahidah Ismail. Selangor’s Noor Izzati Jasni finished third with a 174.8 total while Police’s Bibiana Ng was a distant fourth on 154.
It was Joseline’s second victory of the year. She was the winner of the same event at the Selangor Shooting Championships in January.
“I’m very happy to win. It’s my first competition under the new rules, so it feels great to come away with a win,” said Joseline.
“Previously, we only shot a series of 10. Under the new rules, we have to shoot a series of 20. It’s very challenging mentally because after the eight series there is an elimination after every two series. So, the pressure is definitely on ... my heart rate is 10 times faster! It’s definitely tougher on the shooter but much more entertaining for the spectators.
“I’m still trying to adapt (to the new rules). But we’ve been training under the new rules and thankfully it’s paid off,” added Joseline, the 10m air pistol gold medallist at the 2011 and 2012 South-East Asian Championships.
Joseline is not done yet. She will compete in the 25m sport pistol tomorrow.
It was another disappointing day for Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi as she could only manage a fifth place finish in the 50m rifle prone with a five series total of 581.
Forces dominated the event with Muslifah Zulkifli emerging champion with a 587 total followed by team-mate Haslisa Hamed (586) and Malacca’s Nur Farah Afiqah Mohd Taufekh (584).
