Anis finally lands his first PGM Tour crown
No more heart break: Anis Helmi emerged as the PGM Clearwater Classic champion after hitting a three-under 69 in yesterday’s final round. PETALING JAYA: Anis Helmi staged a magnificent performance on the final day of the PGM Clearwater Classic to win his first PGM Tour title at the Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort in Batu Gajah, Perak, yesterday.
Anis shot a three-under 69 yesterday to seal the RM150,000 championship with a 14-under 274 total, just a stroke ahead of first round leader R. Nachimuthu, who also shot a 69, and Haziq Hamizan (65).
Rizal Amin was fourth, two strokes adrift on 276 while overnight leader Iain Steel and Nicholas Fung were joint fifth on 277. Steel shot a 73 to drop out of contention.
It was a well-deserved victory for Anis who showed great composure throughout the week and came through on the last day when it mattered most.
“At one point in the last few months I almost gave up golf. When I missed the cut at the CCM Rahman Putra Masters I was down and thinking about leaving it.
“But I decided to give it another try and to work on my game. I went to Thailand and spent some time training and sorting out my game,” said Anis, who took home RM25,200.
Nachimuthu, who is preparing for the Malaysian Open from March 21-24, said he was very happy with his game.
“I hope to do well at the Malaysian Open as we now have a good local Tour. The quality of the PGM Tour is also good as we see so many different winners,” said Nachimuthu, who pocketed RM13,650.
