Gurshan denies Darren a home win
Good start: Gurshan Singh scored an 11-4, 11-6, 10-12, 11-9 win over Darren Chan in the boys’ Under-19 final. PETALING JAYA: Promising squash player Gurshan Singh overpowered Darren Chan to win the boys’ Under-19 category in the first leg of the CIMB National Junior Circuit in Kuantan yesterday.
The 18-year-old Gurshan, who is a trainee with the Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM), denied Darren of a win in his home state with an 11-4, 11-6, 10-12, 11-9 triumph.
In the Under-17 final, Selangor’s Alwin Chai came back from the brink of defeat to beat Kedah’s S. Puvendran 12-10, 5-11, 4-11, 11-7, 11-4.
The Under-15 title went to Ong Sai Hung who beat Mivesh Kumar 10-12, 11-3, 11-1, 11-6 in an all-Kedah final.
In the girls’ Under-19 event, Bukit Jalil Sports School trainee Jadeleen Lee took advantage of the absence of Penang’s national top junior Vanessa Raj, Celine Yeap, Rachel Arnold and Teh Min Jie to clinch the title.
The 17-year-old Jadeleen strolled to an 11-8, 11-8, 11-9 win over Kedah’s S. Sivasangari, the British Junior Under-15 runner-up.
Kedah’s Nazihah Hanis was the winner of the Under-17 crown while Sabah’s Lai Wen Li was triumphant in the Under-15 category after a titanic 6-11, 13-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-9 win over Ooi Kah Yan.
