Sanjay’s morale boosted by win
By KNG ZHENG GUAN
PETALING JAYA: Upcoming junior squash player Sanjay Singh Chal (pic) received a pleasant career boost after winning the second leg of the Malaysian Tour in Johor Baru on Sunday.
It was a good performance from the 18-year-old Sarawakian as he beat two former national players - Elvinn Keo and Choong Kam Hing – en route to clinching the title. He took home RM3,800.
Sanjay, who was part of the team that made the semi-finals of the Asian Junior Team Championships in South Korea last month, defeated Elvinn in the semi-finals.
In the final, he recorded an 11-5, 11-6, 11-5 win over Kam Hing.
The win has boosted Sanjay’s confidence as he prepares for the NSC Series No.1 in Bukit Jalil from March 11-15.
He will face sixth seed Ravi Dixit of India in the first round.
“I didn’t expect to win in Johor Baru. My plan was just to have a good time playing squash.
“But I guess a win is always good, especially for one’s confidence,” said Sanjay.
“Elvinn and Kam Hing are more experienced than me. I won because of my fitness since they have been out of the loop for a while.
“But it won’t be easy at the NSC Series. My first round opponent is tough. For now, I’m just aiming to get past the first round,” added Sanjay.
Final results
Men: Sanjay Singh Chal (Swk) bt Choong Kam Hing (ATM) 11-5, 11-6, 11-5.
Women: Delia Arnold (FT) bt Siti Munirah Jusoh (Ter) 11-7, 11-7, 11-4.
