Juniors Chua-Woon upset top seeds to win Dutch title

PETALING JAYA: Chua Khek Wei-Woon Mun Choon were the toast of the Malaysian team at the Dutch International Junior Open badminton championships in Haarlem on Sunday.
The unseeded pair clinched their first international title when they topple top seeds Antoine Lodiot-Julien Maio of France 21-16, 11-21, 21-18 in the boys’ double final.
Earlier in the semi-finals, Khek Wei-Mun Choon survived a tough encounter with tricky Thai pair Kittiphon Chairojkanjana-Sutichon Pol Gul before winning 21-16, 18-21, 21-13.
Malaysia, however, failed to pick up the girls’ singles and doubles crown.
Ho Yen Mei found the going tough against Thailand’s Sarita Suwanakijboriharn, losing 17-21, 21-23.
Joyce Choong-Yap Cheng Wen also lost to Thai opponents – Ruethaichanok Laisuan-Narissapat Lam.
They were beaten by the similar score of 17-21, 21-23.
It was a successful outing for the Thais as they clinched a third title through Sitthikom Thammasin in the boys’ singles. He defeated compatriot Pannawit Thongnuam 21-18, 21-14.
