Japan and England among US Open qualifying hosts
NEW YORK: Courses in England and Japan will host 36-hole sectional qualifying rounds for the US Open golf championship for the ninth year in a row, the US Golf Association announced on Monday.
Walton Heath in Surrey, England, and Ohtone Country Club in Japan’s Ibaraki prefecture will host sectional qualifying events on May 27 with 11 US sites set to host qualifiers on June 3.
Walton Heath, which will host a US Open sectional for the ninth year in a row, was where New Zealand’s Michael Campbell qualified on his way to winning the 2005 US Open crown.
US sites include Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland, which will host a US Open sectional qualifier for the 24th time in 25 years. Japan’s Shigeki Maruyama fired a 58 there in 2000 qualifying.
This year’s US Open will be staged on June 13-16 at Merion Golf Club in suburban Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Online player registration for the event began on Monday and continues through April 24. — AFP
