Determined Aaliyah finishes seventh
By ASHREENA PILLAI
PETALING JAYA: If you fall, get up, dust yourself off and try again.
That’s what Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah (pic) plans to do after finishing seventh in the girls’ Under-17 tricks event at the 2013 Junior Mooba Masters water-skiing competition at the Yarra River in Melbourne, Australia, yesterday.
The spunky 10-year-old, who was making her debut at the competition, was looking good for a strong finish after being placed fourth in round one on Wednesday.
However, a fall on her first trick in her toe pass during the second round yesterday cost her dearly and she could only score an overall total of 409.34 points, which saw her drop three rungs to finish seventh out of 11 competitors.
“I was nervous today for some strange reason,” said Aaliyah.
“But it has been a great experience for me handling the unusual and challenging river site of Moomba in the two-day competition here.”
Despite the fall, her father Hanifah Yoong was satisfied with Aaliyah’s performance.
“She expected to perform better but there’s a lot going on here and for her to grasp them all is tough. She’s still very young and has learnt much from this event. Seventh is a great result for her debut here,” he said.
American favourite Erika Lang blew the competition out of the water. The skier from Gilbert, Arizona, posted an overall total of 1,000 points to clinch victory.
Australian Bianca Mulach was second with an overall total of 593.99 while another American Kara Macintrye finished third with a 561.74 total.
