Peng Soon-Liu Ying still puzzled over loss

IT WAS an agonising day for top mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying when they crashed out in the second round of the All-England yesterday.

What is worrying is that Peng Soon-Liu Ying were still clueless about their loss of form after going down 15-21, 17-21 to Indonesia’s second ranked pair Fran Kurniawan-Shendy Puspa Irawati.

A year ago, the duo were on a high after reaching the semi-finals of the All-England. But, yesterday, they were down in the dumps.

“We’ve hit a bad patch and do not know how to come out of it,” said Peng Soon, referring to their first round loss in the German Open in Mulheim last week.

“The touches are not there anymore and I was just lost.”

Liu Ying said the same.

“It was either we couldn’t repel our opponents’ attacks or we just gave away easy points with our own silly mistakes,” she said.

“This has been going on since December and I still haven’t found a way to get over it.”

Liu Ying was hampered by knee injury before but she refused to use that as an excuse this time.

The duo, however, hoped that a long break from international tournaments would help them to re-group and revive their partnership.

“Our coach (Jeremy Gan) has not listed us for any more tournaments. We’ll go home and look into the root of the problem,” said Liu Ying.

Liu Ying-Peng Soon are assured of a place in the World Championships in Guangzhou in August by virtue of being the world No. 3.

Liu Ying is also hoping to qualify for the women’s doubles with Lim Yin Loo. The duo are ranked 21st in the world and have to stay within the top 24 by the end of this April to safeguard a ticket.
