Puvendran upsets top seed Alwin in U-17 final
By AFTAR SINGH
KUALA LUMPUR: It was a day of mixed fortunes for the Subramanian siblings in the CIMB National Junior Squash Championships Grand Finals.
While Puvendran turned on the style to clinch the boys’ Under-17 title, younger sister Sivasangari fell at the final hurdle of the girls’ Under-19 final at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
Second seed Puvendran was in smashing form as he upset top seed Alwin Chai of Selangor 11-6, 11-7, 12-10. Last month, Puvendran won the second-leg of the tournament in Penang.
Sivasangari, a Form Two student of SMK Sultanah Asma and also the second seed, gave a good fight before going down 10-12, 9-11, 14-12, 11-13 to top seed Vanessa Raj in the final.
Puvendran, a Form Five student, was delighted to have won his second CIMB National Junior circuit title.
“I expected a good fight from Alwin ... I never thought I’d win in straight sets. It was a good win for my squash career as I want to become a national player,” said the Kedahan.
“Although my sister lost, I praised her for her fighting spirit. She gave Vanessa a really good fight and came close to creating an upset.”
Sivasangari, the British Junior Open Under-15 runner-up, was far from crestfallen despite the loss.
“I played well and pushed Vanessa to the limit. I had the chance to beat her but failed to do so at the crucial stage,” said Sivasangari, who will feature in the Milo All-Star Champion–ships in Penang next month.
Kedah also won three other age-group categories in the Grand Finals – the boys’ Under-13 and Under-15 and girls’ Under-13.
