BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Dec 27 (Borneo Bulletin/ ANN): Heavy rain that could lead to flooding and current weather conditions are expected to remain active at least until Tuesday (Dec 27) with showers – heavy and thundery at times – with wind speed that may reach up to 50km/h during or near heavy showers, said the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD).

Based on data from the Meteorological Observation Station a total rainfall of 50.3 millimetres (mm) was recorded on Thursday. The maximum wind speed recorded was approximately 32 kilometres per hour (km/h) at 1.45pm. The BDMD said that this is due to the country currently in the first phase of the northeast monsoon.

Brunei has been experiencing active weather conditions since last Wednesday, influenced by northeasterly wind surge and the formation of low pressure system over the region.

The condition has resulted in unstable and moist atmospheric condition which is favourable for the development of rain clouds.

The influence of the low pressure system has also brought about windy conditions which can be gusty at times especially during the crossing of showers over the Sultanate.

Meanwhile, over Brunei waters, sea condition is still at moderate to rough state, with wave height of one to three metres (m).

The public is advised to take precautionary actions. Risks of falling trees and landslide are possible during heavy showers and gusty conditions.

There are high risks of flooding and flash floods, especially at low-lying and flood-prone areas as well as near the river banks during heavy rain.

Meanwhile, rough sea conditions are dangerous to all small crafts, sea recreational activities and sports.

The public, including road users and fishermen, are advised to stay up to date with the latest weather forecast, advisory and warning issued by the BDMD, and to take necessary actions to ensure safety.

The department will continue to monitor the weather conditions and issue advisories or warnings.

Latest weather information and advisories can be obtained from Brunei WX or by contacting the meteorological forecaster through the Weather Line 114 or by visiting its website or social media. - Borneo Bulletin/ ANN
