SINGAPORE: Two teenagers, aged 16 and 18, were arrested for their suspected involvement in a case of car theft, the police said in a statement on Thursday (July 11).

Preliminary investigations showed that the stolen car, which was parked outside a car workshop in Hougang, was unlocked, with the key left inside the vehicle.

The police said they were alerted to the incident at a car workshop along Kim Chuan Drive at about 11am on July 9.

The car workshop’s owner found that a car belonging to a client had been damaged, and suspected that someone had driven it before parking it back along the road.

Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division managed to identify the two teenagers with the help of images from closed-circuit television cameras and ground inquiries.

The teens were arrested on July 10.

They are believed to be involved in other similar cases of theft of motor vehicle from the same workshop, the police said.

The two suspects are expected to be charged in court on July 12, the police added.

The offence carries a jail term of up to seven years and a fine.

The police advised all motor vehicle owners to avoid leaving behind their keys in the vehicles. They should lock their vehicles whenever they are left unattended, even for a short while. – The Straits Times/ANN
