KUALA LUMPUR: Ravindran Kurusamy (pic) has been appointed president of UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd, succeeding Datuk Ismet Suki whose term has ended after 26 years of association with the company.

The Toyota and Lexus vehicle distributor said in a statement that Ravindran, whose appointment takes effect on Jan 1, 2017, was currently executive director in charge of aftersales, purchasing, quality assurance and property.

Announcing the appointment, UMW Holdings Bhd group chairman and UMW Toyota Motor chairman Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin said: “Mr Ravindran has been with the company for 26 years and in that time, he has taken on positions in different divisions. This has given him valuable insights into the company’s operations as well as its relationship with our joint-venture partner, Toyota Motor Corp.

“I am therefore confident that he has the knowledge and capabilities to lead UMW Toyota Motor ahead in coming years.”

Ravindran holds a bachelor of science in Business Administration with a major in Finance and gained his MBA from the US in 1988.

Paying tribute to the contributions made by his predecessor, Ravindran said: “I am honoured to have been appointed as president of UMW Toyota Motor and I would also like to record my gratitude to Datuk Ismet Suki for having brought the company to the level it is at today.”

In his new role as president, Ravindran aims to continue the momentum of growth although times are challenging for the automotive industry.

“It is my objective to maximise Toyota’s overall performance in the Malaysian market and ensure that the brand remains a major player in the country’s automotive sector,” he said.

UMW Toyota Motor, a joint-venture company established by UMW Corp with Toyota Motor Corp and Toyota Tsusho Corp, has been the assembler and distributor of Toyota and Lexus vehicles in Malaysia since 1982.

It also has its own assembly plant, Assembly Services Sdn Bhd, in Shah Alam, Selangor, and is currently building a second plant in the same state which will begin operations in 2019.
