Local market treads water


THERE was a palpable sense of optimism and excitement on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday as Donald Trump rang the opening bell, becoming the first US president-elect to do so since Ronald Reagan. The scene was heightened by his recent recognition as Time magazine’s “Person of the Year”.

Yet, the cheer failed to sustain markets; Wall Street closed lower that day, marking the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s (DJIA) sixth consecutive decline.
