Hong Kong-based Canadian actor John Chiang Jr. has responded to a netizen’s accusation of leveraging his father, actor David Chiang’s fame, to boost his career.
Recently, John shared on Instagram a series of updates from his trip to France with his father, where they attended an international film festival.
The event featured a screening of David’s 1981 movie Legend Of The Owl.
Expressing pride in his father’s enduring legacy, John captioned one post: “Dad’s reach is global. We really appreciate all the love from the festival and the fans.”
While many responded positively, one netizen decided to take a dig at the 29-year-old, claiming he’s only successful because of his father’s money.
“Benefit of being born into a successful family. Daddy’s money,” said the netizen.
Despite the jab, John maintained his composure and acknowledged his father’s success, replying: “Indeed, I’m extremely privileged and grateful to be my father’s son! I work hard to repay (my parents) every day as best as I can.”
David, 77, is a martial arts actor with over 170 credits under his name.
Among his notable works include Vengeance (1970), The Blood Brothers (1973) and Revolving Doors Of Vengeance (2005).
In an interview with HK01 earlier this year, David spoke about the comparison between his son and Hong Kong actor Shaun Tam – the child of his frequent collaborator Patrick Tam.
While David acknowledged that John has yet to reach Shaun’s level, considering the latter has already been in the industry for over two decades, he urged everyone to stop comparing.
“Patrick’s son is more established than mine, but that’s it. There’s no need to compare these sorts of things. Just be yourself,” he said.
