WASTE management company Alam Flora Sdn Bhd wants the public to pick up any litter they find in public spaces and dispose of them via an appropriate channel.
This culture of conscious sustainability should be instilled, especially during Ramadan when plenty of stalls and restaurants prepare food for Muslims to break their fast.
In a statement, Alam Flora chief operating officer Azahari Zainal Abidin said this appeal to the public was one of the company’s contributions towards maintaining a clean environment and achieving the Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Although sufficient rubbish bins were provided with Alam Flora employees cleaning the designated areas, sometimes there was an overflow of rubbish.
This was seen in the third week of Ramadan, during which the domestic waste collected in Kuala Lumpur was 37,000 tons, an increase of 7% compared to last year’s 34,000 tons.
For Putrajaya, 2,075 tons were collected compared to last year’s 2,060 tons. And in Pahang it was 14,437 tons, a slight decrease of 2% compared to last year’s 14,410 tons.
“The culture of keeping your surroundings clean has been long practised by various cultures such as the Japanese and the Europeans.
“The rubbish found is usually packed neatly and taken home for disposal, away from public areas.
“This attitude needs to be cultivated among Malaysians as not only does it promote a sustainable environment, but also good health and active living,” said Azhari after the launch for the recent “Bawa Pulang Sampah Anda” campaign held at Bazaar Ramadan D’Harmoni Presint 9, Putrajaya.
Putrajaya Corporation’s city services vice-president Nik Shukri Nik Soh launched the campaign.
It was aimed at increasing awareness among the public and traders to always maintain cleanliness at Ramadan bazaars and other locations where people break their fast.
This campaign also coincided with Alam Flora’s bubur lambuk distribution initiative at the bazaar.
The company distributed 500 bubur lambuk in reusable containers to visitors.
The practice of using reusable containers is highly encouraged because it reduces the use of single-use plastic bags when packing food.
