MPAJ shuts down 13 eateries over unhygienic conditions

Health enforcement officers affixing a closure notice for an eatery in Ampang Jaya after it failed to comply with hygiene requirements.

THIRTEEN restaurants around Ampang Jaya, Selangor, were ordered to close during an operation by the authorities.

The eateries were issued 14-day closure notices during a joint raid of 36 premises by the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) and Hulu Langat District Health Office (PKDHL),

The owners were also issued compounds amounting to RM26,000 for various offences, said MPAJ in a statement.

“The main objective of ‘Ops Bersih’ is to improve the quality of food and beverage services within MPAJ’s jurisdiction.

“It is also to prevent the occurrence of food-borne diseases such as food poisoning, typhoid, cholera, dysentery and Hepatitis A among operators and customers,” said MPAJ.

The operation was carried out in Taman Dato Ahmad Razali, Taman Lembah Maju, Pandan Indah, Pandan Perdana, Pandan Cahaya, Ampang Waterfront, Taman Muda and Taman Putra Sulaiman.

It involved 31 health enforcement officers from MPAJ and PKDHL.

In addition to the two-week closure order, several workers handling food were issued compounds for not having had their typhoid injections, having long fingernails and not wearing closed shoes.

“All licensed premises must adhere to food safety regulations stated in the Food Establishment Licensing Bylaw 2007, Food Grading System Guidelines for Local Authorities 2014, Food Act 1983, Food Regulations 1985 and Food Hygiene Regulations 2009.

In December last year, MPAJ revoked the licence of a restaurant owner after a video of a rat nibbling on fried chicken, that was stored in a food-warming cabinet, went viral.

MPAJ’s records showed that the outlet in Pandan Indah had a Grade B cleanliness rating in June 2021.

Selangor Health Department revealed that six compound notices had also been issued to the eatery for food safety and hygiene violations under the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009.

StarMetro recently reported that MPAJ had been carrying out enforcement against food and beverage operators who did not wear face masks since July 1.

It was reported that as many as 90% of food handlers were not wearing face masks despite the Selangor government’s ruling on the requirement.
