Ng: Expansion works for the second phase of the development will start in third quarter of 2024.

EXPANSION work involving the construction of a 4.8km wharf at Westport in Port Klang, is expected to be completed in 15 years.

State investment, trade and mobility committee chairman Ng Sze Han said the expansion would contribute to an additional movement of 13 million TEUs (20-foot-equivalent units) of containers.

He said this in reply to a question from Muhammad Hillman Idham (PN-Gombak Setia) at the Selangor State Assembly.

Providing a breakdown of the domestic and international traffic flow for container handling in the import, export and transshipment categories at Northport and Westport in Port Klang in the past three years, Ng said a record number of 14,061,022 TEUs were handled in 2023.

“In comparison to 2021 and 2022, the total number of TEUs were only 13,724,460 and 13,223,928 respectively.

“The increase in the number of containers handled, raised Port Klang’s ranking to become the 11th busiest port in the world in 2023,” he said.

Ng added that following the Third Supplementary Agreement of Privatisation between the Malaysian government, Port Klang Authority and Westports Malaysia Sdn Bhd, which was signed on Dec 8 last year, Westports would begin expansion works for the second phase of the development in the third quarter of 2024.
