Theatre production highlights critical role of sewage treatment

The production explores the challenges of sewerage workers, highlighting the importance of proper sanitation for public health.

INDAH Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd commemorated its 30-year anniversary with its first charity community theatre show, “Najis Jadi Teman”, a heartfelt collaboration with Wayang Kitchen and Chow Kit Foundation (YCK).

The play, held at Dewan Merbau, at IWK Eco Park @ Pantai Dalam, offered an immersive and educational journey into the essential yet often overlooked world of sewage treatment.

Through a unique blend of theatre, dance and music, the production explored the challenging and critical role of sewerage workers, often described as a 3D job: dirty, dangerous and difficult, highlighting the importance of proper sanitation for public health and environmental preservation.

IWK chief executive officer Narendran Maniam said, “Our highest priority has always been to support those in need while educating the public about the vital importance of sewerage management to protect and preserve our environment.”

Narendran said the show not only honoured three decades of IWK’s dedicated service but also served as a platform to raise awareness and support for local communities.

“Much of our work at IWK operates quietly behind the scenes, often unnoticed, yet important in the preservation of public health and the environment.

“As we celebrate our 30-year anniversary, we are excited to showcase our commitment to Malaysia’s overall well-being through a meaningful and creative collaborations like this charity theatre,” he said.

The opening night of “Najis Jadi Teman” on June 21 was attended by IWK chairman Ahmad Johnie Zawawi, YCK founder Datuk Dr Hartini Zainudin and YCK patron/trustee Tunku Zain Al-Abidin Tuanku Muhriz.

Directing the show was theatrical expert Razif Hashim, featuring Malaysia’s finest talents such as singer-songwriter Atilia Haron, actor Phraveen Arikiah and Alfred Loh as the leading cast members portraying plant managers of IWK.

The talented cast was complemented by the participation of youths from Chow Kit Foundation, a local non-governmental organisation devoted to supporting at-risk children and teenagers in Kuala Lumpur area.

The production was aimed at both raising awareness towards the environment and public health and generating funds for YCK’s initiatives.

The production offered a multifaceted experience, featuring catchy songs, interactive activities, and engaging acts that promised not only entertainment but also an opportunity to contribute to a meaningful cause.

All ticket proceeds went towards supporting Chow Kit Foundation’s work.
