Teams spin with style in Petaling Jaya’s first tops meet


Best traditional costume winners and Gasing Warisan third place team with organisers at PJ Bergasing 2024 in Kelana Jaya Sports Complex,

PETALING Jaya City Council (MBPJ) in collaboration with Malaysian Gasing Association (Pegama) hosted the inaugural PJ Bergasing 2024.

The top-spinning event was aimed at popularising the traditional game among the community.

Nearly 200 participants from 13 states as well Singapore competed at Kelana Jaya Sports Complex in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Also aimed at promoting Petaling Jaya as a heritage tourism destination, the contest aligns with MBPJ’s vision of making Petaling Jaya a City of Arts.

The competition featured three main categories – Gasing Malaysia, Gasing Warisan and residents’ representative council (MPP) PJ as well as the team with the best traditional costume.

A team from Melaka won first place in the Gasing Malaysia category, taking home a cash prize of RM4,000 and hamper.

Shah Alam and Zone 22 teams won the Gasing Warisan and MPP PJ categories respectively, taking home RM2,000 and RM1,000, alongside hampers.

The event also featured cultural and artistic activities, including colouring contests, traditional games and a rock concert featuring Flowers Band, Keena Mentor, Azan Scan, Wom UG14, Shafie Rio and Plus Minus Band.

The inclusion of Pasar Saloma with its classic Malay village theme added to the nostalgic atmosphere, offering traditional foods such as punten and lempeng kelapa. — By HAZEL TAN YAN LING
