High-priority flood mitigation projects in Selangor postponed, not cancelled, says Subang Jaya rep

FIVE high-priority flood mitigation projects in Selangor have been postponed, not cancelled, says Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng.

She said the projects had been approved by the previous government at a cost of RM3.6bil in 2022.

However, the change in government during that same year had resulted in all the procurements being postponed and reassessed, she explained.

Ng said in 2023, new approvals were given for the projects at a total cost of RM2.258bil.

"This has resulted in a savings of over RM1.4bil," she said at a press conference held outside the Selangor assembly sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam on Friday (Feb 21).

Among the approvals granted were for projects involving Sungai Klang at Section 52, Shah Alam; Sungai Kapar Kecil and Sungai Kapar Besar in Klang and Petaling districts; and Sungai Langat Phase 2 - Package 2 in Sepang district.

Also approved is a dual-purpose water retention pond and raw water system at Sungai Klang-Sungai Rasau as well as the flood mitigation plan for Sungai Damansara.

“The Federal Government has once again approved the flood mitigation plan for Sungai Langat Phase 2, Selangor: Package 1: Hulu Langat District, under the 12th Malaysia Plan, on October 18 last year, with a total cost of RM512mil,” Ng said.

“This project aims to resolve flooding issues in the Hulu Langat district and simultaneously reduce flooding risks in the Sepang District.

"The project is currently in the preliminary stage, with the tender for the appointment of consultants ongoing,” she added.
