JASIN: An expectant mother is among three people killed in an accident involving two cars along the Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin Highway (AMJ) in Serkam here.

In the 9pm accident on Sunday (Jan 20), Ezaini Abu Bakar, 34, who is seven-months pregnant succumbed to head injuries on the spot together with her husband Mohd Fairuz Haron, also 34, who was the driver of their vehicle.

The couple's eldest daughter Nurul Fatiha Adelia, seven, and three-year-old son Muhammad Amirul Asyraf were injured in the incident.

Nurul Fatiha sustained serious injuries and is currently being treated at the Intensive Care Unit in Melaka Hospital while Muhammad Amirul is warded in the same hospital for observation.

The 22-year-old driver of the other car was killed on the spot while his 21-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries.

Mohd Fairuz and his family had earlier visited Ezaini's parents and elder brother in Batu Pahat, Johor, for a prayer before they were to have left on pilgrimage to Mecca on Tuesday (Jan 22).

Jasin OCPD Deputy Supt Arshad Abu said the 22-year-old driver, who was travelling from Melaka to Muar, lost control of his vehicle before swerving to the opposite side of the road.

He said the impact of the collision caused three of the victims to be killed on the spot, adding that Fire and Rescue Department personnel took about 40 minutes to extricate the bodies.

DSP Arshad also said the accident caused an eight-hour bottleneck on the Muar-Melaka route.

He added the accident is being probed under Section 41 of the  Road Transport Act 1987.
