PAGOH: All Members of Parliament should be free to voice out their opinions without the threat of losing their positions as MPs, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The Perikatan Nasional chairman said that the recently inked Malaysia Unity Government agreement should be irrelevant if Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim already had two-third support.
"It appears that the prime minister is not optimistic about the upcoming vote of confidence in Parliament on Monday (Dec 19).
"I was informed that he had already received 148 votes of support from MPs, which is more than two-thirds of the majority, and there should be more trust in his supporters to deliver, not punish them with such an agreement," he said.
He said this when met by reporters after attending the Majlis Kesyukuran Bersama Ahli Parlimen Pagoh at the Pagoh Sports Complex, here, on Saturday (Dec 17).
The Bersatu president added that the conditions under which the lawmakers should vacate their seats as MPs if they did not support Anwar as premier were unconstitutional.
"I have never seen laws like this, and this could be applied if it touches on the anti-party hopping law. But this does not relate to the anti-party hopping law.
"There are some views saying that this agreement is unconstitutional and illegal," he said, adding that the political party could have just taken disciplinary action against their members instead of asking them to vacate their seat.
On Perikatan’s stand on Monday over the vote of confidence, Muhyiddin said that they would discuss the matter on Sunday (Dec 18) to get the final decision on the matter.
"Of course, we will not support the motion, but we will discuss this matter further during our pre-council meeting tomorrow," he added.
The Malaysia Unity Government, which comprised Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Gabungan Rakyat Sarawak (GRS), and Parti Warisan, had signed an agreement to commit themselves to a stable leadership.
Anwar had said the agreement was a commitment to support a stable government that would be able to finish its five-year term.
