Wee rubbishes allegations of bid to topple unity govt

Dr Wee: ‘This is a nonsensical article and it is baseless. We are not involved and we were not even aware about the plot.’

PETALING JAYA: MCA’s priority is to save the economy and raise issues of public interest, and certainly not to get involved in any plot to topple the unity government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The party president rubbished allegations made by news portal The Vibes, which reported that some Barisan Nasional MPs, such as himself, Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias and Datuk Seri M. Saravanan were allegedly involved in the plot.

Dr Wee said the report by the news portal was based on unfounded source information and no names were even quoted.

“To me, anyone can write according to their taste, and even rumours. But, for me, as the MCA president, I view this very seriously.

“The media should use verified information. Show proof, how were we involved?

“We were not even aware about such an attempt. So, why were Jeck Seng and I quoted in the report?” said Dr Wee in a video posted on Facebook yesterday.

Without mincing his words, he said the news report should be publicly condemned.

“This is a nonsensical article and it is baseless.

“We are not involved and we were not even aware about the plot.

“What is the logic here for us to support MPs who were elected by the people, and then attempt to force a by-election by resigning?” questioned Dr Wee.

The Ayer Hitam MP said the priority of elected representatives now was to save the economy and raise issues of public interest.

“We will support any good efforts, and for any shortcomings, we will improve on it,” he said.

“We ensure that there are checks and balances so that the people can benefit from this.”

According to the report by the news portal, it was alleged that some Barisan MPs are currently being wooed by individuals to participate in a “do-or-die” mission to quit their party and sacrifice their seats.

The report claimed that these MPs would attempt to seek re-election under the Opposition banner.
