State polls: Start drumming up support now, Muhyiddin tells Perikatan candidates

SHAH ALAM: Perikatan Nasional candidates for the Selangor polls must go down to the ground and meet constituents as soon as they get the green light to contest, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Perikatan chairman and Bersatu president said this was because the campaign period was very short and not enough for candidates to introduce themselves properly in urban constituencies.

He also said the Perikatan election machinery must cover all areas in the state.

"There are no black areas for Perikatan in Selangor.

"I have run election campaigns, big and small... and we won.

"Once your name has been agreed, go down and meet the constituents. Do not wait until nomination day. Two weeks is not enough for us to meet the 3.7 million voters in Selangor," he said at the launch of the Selangor Perikatan election machinery at IDCC here on Saturday (June 24).

He also said that Selangor may be the most developed state in the country but its people are the ones who struggle most when there is inflation.

Muhyiddin also said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has to take responsibility for the increase in the cost of living.

"Whoever runs Selangor needs to be wise as it is an urban and fully developed state where the people have to struggle more to survive unlike those in the rural areas.

"Selangorians cannot go into the jungle and forage for food like we used to do in the old days," said Muhyiddin.

The former prime minister also said the government under him in 2019 managed to ensure the people not only stayed alive during the Covid-19 pandemic but kept their livelihoods during the economic slowdown.

"We did not have a manual on how to run a government during the pandemic and economic slowdown, but we managed. We balanced between saving lives and livelihood," said Muhyiddin.

Selangor dissolved its state assembly on June 23 and is due to hold its state election within 60 days.
