Police urge more Chinese youths to join the force

IPOH: More Chinese youths are encouraged to join the police force, says Perak police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.

He said from the 130,000 men in blue nationwide, the Chinese made up only 1% of the force.

“There is very little involvement of the community in the force, and we need more people from other races to be part of the team.

“There is no quota system in the force based on race and religion, but statistics show that there are 94% Malays, 3% Indians and only 1% Chinese,” he told reporters after attending a career in the police force programme at SMJK Yuk Choy here on Wednesday (July 5).

The event was jointly organised by the school, the police and the Perak Chinese Assembly Hall.

Comm Mohd Yusri added that there were good career prospects for those who joined the force with those who met the criteria having a secure future.

“We try to organise or join programmes, like the one organised at the school, as well as create awareness on a career in the force during our community policing events.

“We need personnel and officers from all races to ensure that safety and security are provided in an efficient manner at all times,” he added.

During his speech to the students, he said as Malaysians we should all have an equal mindset to ensure that our country is safe, secure and progressing at all times.

He said the job scope of the force in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s during the insurgency was totally different from what is faced in this era.

“Nowadays with artificial intelligence, the threat is a global one, and (Malaysia is not spared) this threat.

“Don't always have a negative perception of the force, because my men provide the best services possible to ensure that Perakians can sleep peacefully at night,” he added.

Perak Assembly Hall president Datuk Kwan Foh Kwai said the trend of the Chinese not joining the force was worrying.

He said many Chinese parents had the perception that it was a dangerous profession and that they did not want their children to take the risk.

“This mindset must change, as we all have an equal responsibility as the other races.

“There are so many career (prospects) in the force, and our contribution can help immensely for the betterment of the community,” he added.
